2009 Economic Profile

On behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Moore, it is a pleasure to extend a most cordial welcome to you and thank you for your interest in our community. 2008 was another great year for Moore. As with most of the country there is an amount of uncertainty in the air. If you read the newspapers or watch television you are inundated with bad economic news. These are challenging times for our country. We have the discipline and the processes to succeed in this tough environment. Moore is different because we invest in the future and deliver today. We help to create the future, and by doing so, drive the growth of Moore. Our City Council and management team is experienced, and yet we still learn every day.
One reason I am so confident in our future is our performance. Even with uncertainty facing the country, 2008 was another record year for Moore in sales tax collections. Revenues grew at a rate near 15%. Can we continue to see good growth in 2009? It will be challenging, but Moore is well suited for this. New retail stores and restaurants will open in the area of 19th and I-35 and that should help us grow even further. As we enter 2009 our population is estimated to be over 52,000! That is approximately 11,000 more people than we started this decade with. Our population growth rate far exceeds the growth of our state and our nation! In fact, we are one of the fastest growing communities in Oklahoma. Something we should be very proud of.
The Moore City Council and our Management Team spend a significant amount of time defining what makes Moore a “great community”. We have aggressively reshaped the image of Moore both to our citizens and people outside of Moore over the last few years. We are seeing the fruits of our labor as we hear from more and more people about how proud they are to say that they came from Moore, work in Moore, or live in Moore. While we see a great amount of satisfaction in our work, the task is not done. A great amount of work is left to do.
We plan to deliver in a difficult economic environment. All of us at the City of Moore are committed to executing the goals we set each year. We believe in performance and long-term commitment to the community. In the months ahead you can count on us. That is the way our city was built, that is the way we grow, and that is the way we will be in 2009! Our best days are ahead, I firmly and truly believe that.
Enjoy the 2009 Moore Economic Profile.
Sincerely,
Glenn Lewis, Mayor
